Charles Aloisio - Senior Engineer
Charles joined PELabs in 2003 after 50 years with Bell Telephone Labs,
where he developed successful applications of plastics in
commercial uses. His tenure there spanned the telecommunications industry from
the days of copper to the current fiber optic era.
Charles applies his technical expertise and experience to the areas of
materials development, product and process design, benchmarking and failure
mode analysis (FMA). While his primary focus has been on the thermomechanical
behavior of polymeric materials, his experience encompasses thermal,
electrical, and optical properties, as well. When Charles applies his knowledge
of thermal analysis, viscoelasticity and rheology to product engineering
projects, the result is reduced risk of failure, reduced production costs, and
greater customer satisfaction.
Charles' ability to make sophisticated concepts easy to understand and apply,
along with his experience working with diverse technical personnel, put him in
great demand as a lecturer and consultant. Recently he was invited to share his
technical experience with engineers of a major Japanese fiber optic supplier.
Charles earned his PhD at Purdue University under the guidance of Prof. Richard
Schapery.
Wayne Barber - Laboratory Technician
Wayne has been applying his laboratory knowledge and skills to the
thermo-mechanical testing of plastic materials and products since 1998. At
that time, he joined the staff to implement PELabs' laboratory quality program
as well as to supervise the PELabs quality assurance contract with The Plastics
Group. Previously, Wayne worked for twelve years in the Procter & Gamble
Finished Product Quality Lab. There he implemented P&G's SPC and FDA (GMP)
requirements. Between P&G and PELabs, he worked for Herman Miller as a quality
technician, where in addition to inspecting product, he helped them obtain
their ISO 9000 registration.
Sam Brockway - General Manager
Sam is president and founder of The Plastics Group (TPG) and PELabs, where he
is engaged in the development and manufacture of plastic and composite
products. Previously Sam was on the technical staff of the Materials
Engineering and Chemistry department at Bell Telephone Laboratories in
Norcross, Ga. There he was involved in the application of various areas of
mechanics, including elasticity, viscoelasticity and fracture mechanics, to the
selection and development of plastics for use in both fiber optics and
traditional wire media. Before that, he was engaged in theoretical studies into
the propagation of shock waves in elastic materials, the nonlinear mechanical
behavior of materials subject to microstructural damage, and the growth of
cracks in viscoelastic media. He also served as a research scientist at R and D
Associates in Marina del Rey, Calif.; an assistant professor of mechanical
engineering at Texas A&M University; and a research engineer at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
Sam earned a BSCE from the University of Miami in 1966, an MSEM from the
Georgia Institute of Technology in 1968, and a PhD in Applied Mechanics from
California Institute of Technology in 1972.
Tom Ellis - Laboratory Manager
Tom has worked as senior engineer and laboratory manager at PELabs since 1981.
His knowledge and experience in electronics, optics and polymers make him an
integral part of PELab's interdisciplinary product-development team. Tom has
considerable expertise in plastics testing, analysis, and design; as well as in
CAD/CAE for plastics, polymer processing, and tool design and building. Since
TPG's founding in 1992, Tom has supervised its Quality Assurance program while
overseeing processing and tooling engineering.
From 1979 to 1981, Tom served on Bell Telephone Laboratories' technical staff
in optical communications systems development. Before that he was a research
engineer in medical LASER instruments at the University of Washington and at
Honeywell, Inc. He also worked in military communications equipment
construction, in Seattle, Wash. Tom is a co-inventor on three patents, has
jointly published four technical papers, and is a member of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Tau Beta Pi, the engineering
honor society.
Tom earned bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering at the
University of Washington.
Tesfaye Gutema - Laboratory Engineer
Tesfaye has worked in product development and testing of plastic parts and
materials at PELabs since 1999. Tesfaye's laboratory skills and innovative
approach to problem solving make him an invaluable member of the PELabs team.
Tesfaye's expertise in Design of Experiments (DOE) and in CAD/CAE contributes
significantly to PELabs' product development effort.
Previously, Tesfaye was a senior lecturer in the department of mechanical
engineering, technology faculty, at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. His
research areas included characterization of engineering surfaces, application
and characterization of ceramic coatings for industrial and medical
applications, and non-conventional cutting technology and metal forming.
Tesfaye earned a BSc in mechanical engineering from Addis Ababa University in
1980, an MSc in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic of Turin, Italy, in
1985, and a PhD in manufacturing engineering from the University of Parma,
Italy, in 1999.
John Judge - Manufacturing Engineer
John joined PELabs in 1996, managing manufacturing operations at The Plastics
Group. His hands-on experience with modern quality and manufacturing
methodology enable the engineering group to develop products that can be
manufactured reliably at reasonable cost. Before joining PELabs, John managed
injection molding plants for the Carlon Division of Lamson & Sessions, Inc.,
and for the Lerio Corporation.
After earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech,
John served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery. He
later worked in General Electric's Lighting System department, where he
received two joint patents and coauthored a paper for Illuminating Engineering
magazine.
